Parenting Tips and Advice for the Everyday Mum
Diary of an Imperfect Mum says he’s tried to keep his 10 tips out of the “fads and trends” of parenting and to keep them grounded in what science tells us about effective ways to raise children. The bottom line: give your child lots of love and attention, make sure he has clear rules, provide reasons for them, and follow through on consequences. Praise his positive behavior to reinforce it, and talk with him about the natural physical and emotional changes of puberty.
Another tip: avoid using criticism or blame in front of your kids. Young kids pick up cues from their parents, and harsh language or outbursts can leave lasting scars on them.
Finally, don’t expect too much of your kids, either. Remember that nobody’s perfect, and kids need time to learn and practice skills (like brushing teeth). Also, be realistic about what your kids are capable of, and don’t push them to do things they’re not ready for. That can lead to frustration for everyone. Instead, be a role model and show them how to manage setbacks and failure.
